Celebrating Soil Health during International Compost Awareness Week – May 5-11, 2024

Once a year, there comes a week that turns the spotlight onto one of the earth’s most vital but often overlooked resources – soil. Yes, I’m talking about International Compost Awareness Week! Here at Worm Wrangler, we’re not just participants; we’re enthusiastic cheerleaders for the soil health movement – All. The. Time! Why? Because we believe in the magic that happens under our feet, and we dedicate every day to promoting and perpetuating vermicomposting to protect this precious resource.

For those who might be new here, vermicomposting is the process of composting with help from earthworms. This process converts organic waste into an incredibly nutrient-rich fertilizer that can help soil regain its health and increase its productivity. It’s like a superfood smoothie for your garden or farm, packed with all the good things that plants love!

Our Role in International Compost Awareness Week

Every year, International Compost Awareness Week seeks to raise awareness of the importance of composting for soil health, and at Worm Wrangler, we seize the opportunity to spread the word and share our passion for vermicomposting. This year, we’re taking our mission to the next level by teaming up with AgScape to offer a unique virtual field trip targeted at school groups for kindergarten to grade 8.

Through our ongoing membership in the Compost Council of Canada, Worm Wrangler is able to participate in and learn together with an international team of leaders in composting and responsible organic waste handling in Canada.

Why Is This Important?

Our soils are the foundation of the food web and ecological cycles. Healthy soil equals healthy plants, which equals healthy people (and animals!). By incorporating vermicomposting into our lives, we contribute to a cycle of sustainability that not only reduces waste getting to landfill but also enriches our earth, making it a win-win.

Vermicomposting isn’t just for farmers or gardeners. It’s a practice that can be adopted by anyone with a bit of space and a desire to make a difference. Through our virtual field trip and ongoing educational efforts, we’re here to show you how easy and rewarding it is to start your composting journey.

Join Us in Making a Difference

As we celebrate International Compost Awareness Week, we invite you to join us in making soil health a priority all year long. Whether you’re a teacher looking to inspire your students, a community leader aiming to make a local impact, or simply someone curious about sustainable living practices, Worm Wrangler is here year-round to help you with those daunting first steps toward becoming a soil health superhero.

Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Spread the word. Education is key to growing the movement. Share your newfound knowledge and enthusiasm for composting and soil health with friends, family, and your wider community. Post and tag on social media using #icaw2024
  • Invite Worm Wrangler to share about soil health, vermicompost and worm nerdiness! I’m happy to visit classrooms and children’s groups, along with more technical adult programs such as horticulture societies, public libraries and the like.
  • Get vermicomposting. Get worms from Worm Wrangler, or join me for our next how-to workshop.

At Worm Wrangler, every week is a chance to celebrate and work towards better soil health, but International Compost Awareness Week holds a special place in our hearts. Together, we can make a substantial impact, one worm at a time!

Remember, the ground beneath our feet is alive and teeming with potential. Let’s nurture it, for today and all the tomorrows to come. Join us in our mission to support soil health, and let’s wrangle some worms for the greater good!
